Frequently asked questions about kids’ classes in Aachen

From what age can children do martial arts?

At Shouraki in Aachen, children can start training from age 3. The Panda group is for 3 to 5-year-olds, the Ninja group for 6 to 8-year-olds and the Samurai group for 9 to 15-year-olds. From age 16 it is on to the adult classes. Teaching is suited to the age group and playful.

Which kids' groups are there at Shouraki?

The age groups are clearly graded: Panda for ages 3 to 5, Ninja for ages 6 to 8 and Samurai for ages 9 to 15. From age 16 you train in the adult classes. The groups train in a way that suits their age; from the Ninja group on, boxing, kickboxing, freestyle wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are added. Which group trains on which day is in the timetable on this page.

Does martial arts make children aggressive?

No, quite the opposite: in training, respect, consideration and non-violent behaviour are explicitly the focus. Children learn to stand up for themselves, set boundaries and protect themselves without hurting others. At the same time they become more self-confident. Partner drills build trust, helpfulness and a sense of responsibility.

What does a kids' class look like?

Every class begins with a thorough warm-up, followed by technique training and partner drills, then playful conditioning, and finally stretching and a cool-down. They practise controlled defence, targeted evasion and simple punching and kicking techniques. Everything is built to suit the age group, with plenty of movement, games and variety between exercise formats.

What does my child need to bring to class?

Comfortable sportswear, clean indoor trainers and enough to drink are all you need for training. For children and young people under 18, suitable protective equipment is compulsory, in particular head guard, shin guards and groin guard. At the start the school can lend equipment; after that, the equipment needed should gradually be bought yourself. The school provides large training equipment such as punch bags, pads and shields.

Can parents stay during the kids' class?

Yes. In the training hall there is a bench and a screened-off area with coffee for parents, plus a comfortable waiting area with snacks and drinks. If you would rather use the waiting time actively, you can train yourself during the kids' class: in the gym area or in a fitness class that runs at the same time. Free parking is also available. Training along counts once as a trial session in the gym; after that you need your own membership.

What does my child learn in the kids' class?

Your child learns simple self-defence techniques and, at the same time, a great deal about themselves. On the physical side the focus is on coordination, balance, reaction and a healthy sense of their body. On top of that come self-confidence, concentration, dealing with frustration and social skills such as consideration and team spirit. These values reach far beyond the training room.

How does the trial class for children work?

Your child can train along twice for free, with no obligation and no contract. You register for a slot in advance and arrive about 15 minutes before the start so there is enough time to change. Equipment needed to get started can be provided. After that the class runs as usual, and you can stay as a parent. You can arrange the slot for the trial class directly online.
