Learn boxing in Aachen: who the class is for

The boxing class at Shouraki is for adults aged 16 and over. You do not need any previous experience. You practise each technique slowly first, and only then does it appear in combinations. Stamina and strength grow as you train. You train in a group and change partners regularly.

Children and teenagers have their own groups, and you can find an overview under kids’ martial arts in Aachen.

In boxing you only punch, while kickboxing adds kicks. The punching technique, guard and footwork from boxing are therefore useful in other martial arts too. If you want to compare the two, read the guide Boxing or kickboxing. You learn the kicking techniques in the class kickboxing in Aachen. How boxing is organised as a competitive sport in Germany is explained by the German Boxing Federation (Deutscher Boxsport-Verband, in German).

What a boxing session at Shouraki looks like

A boxing session lasts 90 minutes, from 19:00 to 20:30. Please always arrive 15 minutes before the start so that you can get changed and settle in calmly.

  1. Warm-up: a joint warm-up that reduces the risk of injury.
  2. Technique work and partner drills: footwork, guard and punching technique, first slowly and then more and more smoothly, with rotating partners.
  3. Sparring and conditioning: sparring rounds and conditioning work, plus work on focus pads and punch bags.
  4. Stretching and cool-down: stretching exercises to finish the session.

Two examples from the technique section: in the “bob and weave” you move your head under and to the side of the punching line, which trains reflexes and your sense of distance. In “push stepping” you push your front foot forward, followed by the back foot, and adjust your position that way. Breathing comes into it too: breathing out deliberately as you punch increases punching power and improves energy efficiency.

Sparring in boxing: controlled and step by step

Sparring is part of boxing training. The rounds are controlled, and protective gear is compulsory. What to expect in such a round is explained in the guide Sparring in martial arts.

Frequently asked questions about boxing in Aachen

What do you learn in boxing?

In boxing you learn precise body mechanics, clean punching technique, guard work and footwork. Head movements such as the bob and weave train reflexes and a sense of distance, and footwork patterns such as push stepping help you control the distance to your opponent. Deliberate breathing also comes into it, improving punching power and energy efficiency. At Shouraki in Aachen, boxing is taught as a class of its own.

What is the difference between boxing and kickboxing?

In boxing only punches count, while kickboxing adds kicks and techniques from a greater distance. This makes boxing technically narrower and lays the foundation in punching technique, guard and footwork on which other disciplines build. Shouraki in Aachen offers both classes, and many students use boxing as a base for kickboxing or MMA.

Can I start boxing with no previous experience?

Yes, you can start with no previous experience. Technique is first practised slowly and cleanly before it is used in combinations and under pressure, and our trainers correct your technique along the way. You do not need a particular level of fitness, because stamina and strength develop as you train. To try it out, you can arrange a free trial class online.

What does a boxing session look like?

Every session follows the same structure: a thorough warm-up of at least 15 to 20 minutes, then technique work and partner drills, followed by sparring and conditioning, and finally stretching and a cool-down. You train on focus pads and punch bags and with rotating partners. The current boxing times are in the timetable on this page.

What equipment do I need for boxing training?

To get started, comfortable sportswear, well-fitting socks or flat trainers and plenty of water are enough. Boxing gloves can be provided for your first session. After that you should gradually get your own gloves and the protective gear you need. Protective gear is compulsory for sparring. Avoid shoes with thick soles, take off any jewellery and bring a hair tie if you have long hair. The school provides punch bags and focus pads.

Is boxing dangerous?

No, with controlled training boxing is not inherently more dangerous than other sports. Safety comes first in class. Sparring is part of training but is done in a controlled way and only increased once you are ready technically and mentally. Protective gear and mutual respect are compulsory. Every session begins with a thorough warm-up.

How does boxing affect fitness?

Boxing improves stamina, coordination and reflexes and is a full-body workout that burns a lot of calories. The mix of technique work, partner drills and conditioning phases challenges the cardiovascular system and the muscles together, and technique work also encourages an upright posture. Stress relief comes on top of that. How much of this you notice depends mainly on how regularly you train.

What age can you start boxing?

The boxing class for adults at Shouraki is open from age 16. Younger students train in age-appropriate groups: Panda for ages 3 to 5, Ninja for ages 6 to 8 and Samurai for ages 9 to 15. The timetable on this page shows which group trains when.
