Jeet Kune Do
The philosophy behind our training
Jeet Kune Do is a martial art developed by Bruce Lee. It is a training method and also a philosophy of life. The idea behind it is that there is no fixed method for winning a fight. The aim is to create an effective method of self-defence by adapting flexibly to the demands of the fight. Jeet Kune Do emphasises adaptability and effectiveness, and the ability to react quickly and precisely.
Anyone who understands Jeet Kune Do properly is interested above all in its liberating power: it serves as a mirror for self-knowledge and is no rigid rulebook. Bruce Lee wanted to free his students from having to follow a single style or system. That same understanding shapes training at Shouraki to this day: in our martial arts centre, under the Jeet Kune Do concept, we offer kickboxing, Wing Chun and ground fighting with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling too. Alongside technique, we teach confidence, discipline and respect.
Find out more about the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do
“Knowledge in the martial arts ultimately means self-knowledge,” said Bruce Lee. He developed Jeet Kune Do in 1967, and the name means “the way of the intercepting fist”. Unlike many other martial arts, it has no fixed sequences of techniques that make up a style of its own. JKD is unbound: it draws on techniques from many styles and is bound by none of their rules.
For Bruce Lee, a style must never become a bible whose principles can never be broken. People always differ in their training, physical condition, mental abilities and preferences, and a good fighter acts intuitively rather than following a rigid pattern. Since 1995 we have passed this understanding of flexibility and self-knowledge on to our students at Shouraki.
