Frequently asked questions about Wing Chun in Aachen
What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a Kung Fu style designed for efficient self-defence at close range. Instead of relying on strength, Wing Chun uses body mechanics, structure and the targeted use of energy. Exercises such as Chi Sao, the sticky hands, train reflexes, a sense of distance and the ability to counter attacks directly. At Shouraki in Aachen, Wing Chun is one of the disciplines under the Jeet Kune Do concept.
What is the difference between Wing Chun and MMA?
Wing Chun and MMA differ in distance and aims. Wing Chun works mainly at close range with structure, body mechanics and direct counters, without unnecessary effort. MMA combines boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and covers stand-up fighting, clinch and ground fighting equally. Both disciplines are taught at Shouraki in Aachen, so you can compare them in a free trial class.
Do I need any experience for Wing Chun?
No, you can start with no previous experience. Training at Shouraki is for beginners and advanced students, and our instructors guide you personally and correct your technique. You do not need a particular level of fitness either, because stamina and body control develop as you train. If you would like to try it, you can join two sessions for free and arrange a free trial class online.
What does a Wing Chun session look like?
Every session starts with the Wing Chun forms. Technique work and partner drills follow, then sparring and conditioning, and finally stretching and a cool-down. You can find the current Wing Chun class times in the timetable on this page.
What is Chi Sao?
Chi Sao means "sticky hands" and is one of the central partner exercises in Wing Chun. Both partners stay in contact and respond to each other's movements through touch. The exercise trains reflexes, a sense of distance and the ability to counter an opponent's movements directly. It is one reason Wing Chun also works in tight spaces.
Is Wing Chun suitable for self-defence?
Yes, Wing Chun is designed for practical self-defence. You learn to counter attacks instinctively, to use your energy with purpose and to stay in control even in tight combat situations. Training avoids unnecessary effort, with precision, timing and body control to the fore. The same skills help you react more calmly and quickly in stressful situations.
What do I need to bring to Wing Chun training?
Comfortable sportswear, well-fitting socks or flat trainers and plenty of water are enough to start with. Choose clothing without unnecessary decoration in which you will not overheat or get cold, take off any jewellery and bring a hair tie if you have long hair. Shoes with thick soles are unsuitable because of the risk of twisting an ankle. Changing rooms, showers and lockers for valuables are available.
What age can I start Wing Chun?
The Wing Chun class for adults at Shouraki is open from age 16. Younger students train in age-appropriate groups: Panda for ages 3 to 5, Ninja for ages 6 to 8 and Samurai for ages 9 to 15. The timetable on this page shows which group trains on which day.
Are there gradings in Wing Chun?
