MMA in Aachen: what Mixed Martial Arts means

MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. If you train MMA at Shouraki in Aachen, you practise standing, in the clinch and on the ground, and learn techniques from boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The school follows the principle of Jeet Kune Do: keep what works.

Much of the appeal lies in the changes of distance. You punch and kick from range, control in the clinch and take your partner to the ground with takedowns. There you hold positions or apply joint locks and chokes, known as submissions. You can find background on the sport in the Wikipedia article on Mixed Martial Arts.

MMA in Aachen: what you learn in class

Training builds up step by step: first you practise the movements cleanly, then you put them together into combinations, and in sparring you apply them under pressure.

Stand-up fighting

In stand-up fighting you train punches, kicks, knee strikes and control in the clinch, along with distance, footwork and timing. Boxing provides punching technique and guard, kickboxing contributes kicks and knee strikes, and Muay Thai adds elbows and clinch work. If you want to go deeper into individual elements, there are dedicated classes for boxing in Aachen and kickboxing in Aachen.

Ground fighting

Many fights end on the ground. You learn to bring opponents down in a controlled way, hold positions and apply joint locks or chokes. The takedowns come from wrestling, the locks and chokes from BJJ. At Shouraki, ground fighting is done no-gi, meaning without the traditional uniform. You work through body control, pressure and clean positions, and this carries over directly to MMA. There is a dedicated class for this: Ground fighting and grappling in Aachen. For the difference from MMA, see the guide MMA or grappling.

Who is MMA in Aachen suitable for?

The MMA class is for adults aged 16 and over. Beginners and advanced students train in suitable groups, and intensity and content depend on your level. You do not need any particular level of fitness, because stamina, strength and endurance grow over time. What matters more is that you come regularly.

MMA for beginners

You start with the basics of stand-up fighting and simple combinations. The trainers correct your technique before you move on to sparring. Sparring is only added once you are ready technically and mentally, and protective gear is then compulsory. For how such a round works, see the guide Sparring in martial arts.

MMA for advanced students

With experience you develop your technique, tactics and fitness further. Training is more intense and sparring more demanding, and both are matched to your level.

MMA for women and self-defence

The class teaches self-defence for different distances and builds fitness and coordination. Which class suits which goal is covered in the guide Learning self-defence in Aachen. The women-only classes are called Women’s Fitness Kick- and Thai Boxing and are for ages 18 and over.

Under 16

For younger students there are youth groups for ages 9 to 15 with kickboxing, boxing and grappling. You can find the overview under Youth training for ages 9 to 15.

Frequently asked questions about MMA training in Aachen

Can I start MMA without any experience?

Yes, you can start with no previous experience at all. Training begins with the absolute basics. Two trainers are present in class, so beginners and advanced students each get suitable attention and you learn safely and correctly from the start.

Do I need a special level of fitness?

No, a particular starting level of fitness is not required. MMA training improves your stamina, strength and endurance over time. Being willing to come regularly matters more than any particular fitness level.

What happens in a free trial class?

For a free trial class in Aachen you sign up in advance and arrive about 15 minutes before the start. Training begins with a thorough warm-up, followed by technique work, partner drills and, depending on the content, sparring. Afterwards there is time for your questions.

Is MMA dangerous?

No, with controlled training MMA is not inherently more dangerous than other sports. Safety comes first in class. Sparring is done in a controlled way and only introduced once you are ready technically and mentally. Protective gear and mutual respect are compulsory.

How often should I train?

Above all, what counts is regularity over many months. If you come every week, you consolidate what you have learned and make progress. If you would like to train more often, ask at the school.

What is the difference between MMA and Kung Fu?

MMA and Kung Fu take different approaches: MMA combines techniques from boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into one system for stand-up fighting, clinch and ground fighting. Kung Fu styles such as Wing Chun, by contrast, work mainly at close range using body mechanics, structure and direct counters. At Shouraki in Aachen you can find MMA and Wing Chun under the same roof, so you can compare the approaches in a free trial class.

Is MMA only for professionals?

No, MMA is not only a professional sport. At Shouraki in Aachen, beginners and advanced students train in suitable groups, and intensity and content are adapted to your level. You start with the basics of stand-up fighting and simple combinations. Sparring is added once you are ready technically and mentally. Most participants train for fitness, self-defence and community, not for competition.

What equipment do I need for MMA training?

To get started, comfortable sportswear, well-fitting socks or flat trainers and plenty of water are enough. Boxing gloves can be provided for your first session. After that you should gradually get the equipment you need. Suitable protective gear is compulsory for sparring. Avoid shoes with thick soles, take off any jewellery and tie back long hair. The school provides large training equipment such as punch bags, focus pads and strike shields.
